Florence Bienenfeld
As a Senior Marriage and Family Counselor for Los Angeles County Conciliation Court, and in private practice, Florence Bienenfeld, Ph.D., has been helping divorcing families for years. Her role as a children's advocate goes back to 1968, when she graduated from UCLA with a master's degree in special education. After graduating, she received a government grant to educate severely emotionally disturbed children. She received her Ph.D. in marriage, family, and child counseling in 1972. Soon she realized the necessity of working with parents as well as children. "The family is a system," Bienenfeld believes. "Children are incredibly resilient and parents can help them through the feelings about the divorce. But if parents are too wrapped up in their own problems to understand or deal with the needs of their children, the children get pushed back."
Bienenfeld served as the Los Angeles County Conciliation Court's senior marriage, family, and child counselor for eleven years. She retired in 1985 to go into private practice. She is the recipient of several awards for outstanding service to families and children of divorce from the Association of Family Conciliation Courts, the mayor of Santa Monica, and Los Angeles Councilwoman Pat Russell. Her work has appeared in numerous professional journals, and she is also the author of My Mom and Dad are Getting a Divorce and Child Custody Mediation: Techniques for Counselors, Attorneys, and Parents. She is a much sought after lecturer and has frequently appeared on radio and television.
